The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions consumers to be wary of companies that make claims regarding credit repair. These companies, commonly called credit clinics, don’t do anything for consumers that consumers cannot do for themselves at little or no cost. Beware of any organization that offers to create a new identity and credit file for you. The FTC and state attorneys general have filed actions against those who pursue these fraudulent practices. Here are some warning signs that the FTC and others say consumers should look out for to determine if they might be dealing with a credit clinic:
An organization that guarantees to remove late payments, bankruptcies, or similar information from a credit report
An organization that charges a lot of money to repair credit
A company that asks the consumer to write to the credit reporting company and repeatedly seek verification of the same credit account information in the file, month after month, even though the information has been determined to be correct
An organization that is reluctant to give out their address or one that pushes you to make a decision immediately

For a helpful brochure about credit clinics, you can write to the Federal Trade Commission, Sixth and Pennsylvania Avenues, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20004 and request a brochure titled “Credit Repair: Self Help May Be Best.”

I would recommend going with a company that is not a settlement company and that you are comfortable with. I went with Debt Counseling Corporation–they were great! They helped me lower my interest, payments and consolidated everything. I called a few companies that gave me higher payment amounts and charged a lot in fees. I have had a really good experience with them as have my friends that were looking for help. Check them out–give them a call 888-354-6332. i spoke with Colin–he is at ext 344. He was so good at helping me with my budget and going over everything. Also, my credit is better then before bc the credit cards still report every month that it is being paid on time.

Don’t do it! Even if this company is credible the program they use will ruin your credit and could backfire on you. What they do is tell you to stop paying your credit cards until they get charged off so you end up with tones of 30, 60, 90+ days late on your credit report along with a bunch of charge offs and these won’t go away for 7 years. Then you’ll have collection agencies calling you non-stop and harassing you to pay these bills which will have been earning interest while you weren’t paying and will be even higher than they are now, and even if you can settle them for 50% of the debt it’s still almost as high as it already is.

My advice do it yourself! Call your creditors adn ask for lower APR’s then start snowballing your debt. Pay as much as you can….I mean every spare cent you have…. cut costs in your budget in other areas if you can…. on the account with the highest interest (while still paying at least the minimum on everything else) until it is paid off then take all that money and start paying down the account with the next highest interest and so on until your debt is gone. It takes time and commitiment but it won’t ruin your credit.

  5. Hi Mac j…
I tried a couple of Credit Counseling places and they really don’t save you that much…I personally was disappointed. If you have good credit, I would suggest to try for a loan…and if that doesn’t work, you could check out these Credit Counseling places on line and see how much they would save you…you don’t have to commit unless you want to. If that doesn’t work for you and you are drowning in debt, you may want to see if Chapter 7 would work in your favor. You can always get a FREE consult from a lawyer…I hope everything turns out for you.
    J.
